Malaysia’s Plant-Based Drinks Get A Boost With Pure Mylk And Tetra Pak

Innovation in Malaysia’s plant-based beverage scene is gaining momentum. Pure Mylk, a local pioneer in plant-based drinks, has partnered with global packaging leader Tetra Pak to help functional beverages, enriched with protein, vitamins, or probiotics, move from concept to market
more efficiently.

At the heart of the partnership is The Mylky Way, Pure Mylk’s innovation hub in Pulau Indah, Selangor. The facility provides brands with the space and resources to experiment with formulations, test new ingredients, and access advanced packaging and processing technology in a single, streamlined location

The move comes as demand for functional and plant-based beverages continues to surge. Malaysia’s plant-based market is projected to more than double from US$18.5 billion in 2025 to US$39.7 billion by 2031, while the global functional drinks market could hit US$759 billion by 2034.

Consumers are looking for more than just flavour—they want drinks that support wellbeing, fit into busy lifestyles, and rely on natural ingredients. Health and convenience are shaping the trend. Research from Tetra Pak shows that 58% of consumers choose functional drinks for their physical health, while 42% are motivated by the sense of control over their wellbeing. Ready-to-drink options appeal to 59% of consumers for their convenience, and 71% prefer natural ingredients over synthetic alternatives, even at a higher price.

Malaysia mirrors this pattern: a 2024 GlobalData survey found that seven in 10 locals consider  the health impact of products before buying, with ready-to-drink options especially appealing.

Ingredient innovation is also shaping the market. Sunflower protein, in particular, is gaining attention for being sustainable, allergen-free, and nutritionally complete with a neutral taste that works well in ready-to-drink beverages. Tetra Pak’s chemical- and water-free processing method offers brands a clean-label, cost-effective alternative to pea or soy protein. The Mylky Way is designed to remove barriers for brands. By combining ideation, testing, and co-creation under one roof, it shortens development timelines and lets brands innovate at scale without heavy upfront investment or long import delays. Tetra Pak’s aseptic technology keeps drinks shelf-stable for up to 12 months without refrigeration, giving brands more flexibility in distribution.

Marcus Khoo, Pure Mylk CEO, explains, “The hub isn’t just for Pure Mylk—it’s infrastructure for the whole Malaysian plant-based industry. Partnering with Tetra Pak means brands can develop, package, and scale products to international standards.”

Marcelo Perazzo, Tetra Pak Managing Director for Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, and Indonesia, adds, “This collaboration sets a benchmark for the local industry, helping brands innovate faster and compete regionally.”

The collaboration marks a significant step in building Malaysia’s plant-based functional beverage sector, creating opportunities for faster innovation, sustainable growth, and regional reach
